I bent down to tie the laces of Lucy's shoes; she was very particular about what she wore, even down to her blue sneakers with orange socks. She said good-bye to her cat, Sister, and clutched Dolly, who "has to see where I am going." As we walked the three blocks to her school, Lucy waved to the shopkeepers, the trees, and the gargoyles peering down from the corner cathedral. We pass through this neighborhood every day, but that day, it felt like we were crossing to a new world. And, tucked into her backpack, out of sight of her classmates, were Lucy's blankie and pacifier. Just in case.
