Millions of Cats
$15, amazon.com
By Wanda Gag (Putnam/Penguin, ages 4 and up) A museum piece, in print continuously since its publication in 1928. Gag ("gog") is a canonical figure in children's book circles, and this is one of those numerically cumulative books that every kids' writer tries from time to time. Two old folks are depicted in folksy pen-and-ink drawings. The old woman expresses the desire to have a cat. The old man collects hundreds, then thousands, then millions of cats, which proceed to eat each other up (off camera), and the folktale couple wind up with the one kitten. What's best about this book is that it's old — it suggests a sensibility of time past and a continuum of children's literature. It's the kind of thing that would be neat to find in an old trunk in the attic. For those without an attic, here is a brand-new edition. — February/March 2007 By Daniel Pinkwater
