Little 1 (who "looked like a stick") is lonely and sets out to find some friends. Two yellow pears inform him that 3 would be a crowd, 5 umbrellas let him know there's no room for ordinary sticks, and so on, until he meets a loopy hoop who shows him how useful a zero can be.

Originally published in 1962, this is a perfect book, with nice big type, a lively line, and the unerring touch of master graphic designer Paul Rand. Buy this one — your kids will keep it for their kids.
