Here's a daring proposition: Take a solid classic, the original illustrations for which are especially good and universally known and...illustrate it anew. It's been done, lots of times, and always made me crave the original John Tenniel drawings. This time, well, I kind of like it. It's a deluxe edition, the drawings are fine, a bit modern, and they pay appropriate homage to Tenniel. It passes my one and only test: Would I have liked this when I was a kid? Daniel Pinkwater is the author/illustrator of many children's books, which, by the year 2106, will either be considered classics or be out of print. He reviews children's books on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday.
