Mango Management
print

Do you avoid giving your child mangoes because they're too messy to cut? Try slicing them the way they do in Burma — and other parts of the fruit's native southern Asia.
Step 1: Slice fruit lengthwise down the two sides of the pit. (The tough, fibrous pit is long, flat, and basically the same color as the flesh. Discard it.)
Step 2: Cut the flesh, but not the skin, into a checkerboard pattern, making 3 vertical and 2 horizontal cuts.
Step 3: Flip the mango halves inside out (the way you'd flip a tennis ball cut in half, or your eyelid if you're a 10-year-old boy). Peel or cut the fruit off the skin, or hand it to your child to eat right off the rind.
