PHYSICAL HEALTH Doctor visits & immunizations. Once children reach preschool age, they should continue to see a pediatrician annually, even though no immunizations are typically required until the start of kindergarten. The next set of recommended shots can, however, be given anywhere between 4 and 6 years. Some parents and children opt to get them done at the four-year visit, either because the child will be going to kindergarten before their next check-up, or simply to get them over with. During the visit, the doctor will certainly weigh and measure your child and perform a physical examination. A check of blood pressure, hearing, and vision is also fairly routine at 4 years.
Teeth. Make sure that you remember to schedule your child for regular dental check-ups, recommended as often as every six months at this age. Between visits, make sure to teach your child to brush after meals and avoid excessive amounts of sugary foods. While it is likely to be another year or two before the baby teeth fall out and the permanent ones come in, it is just as important to learn to take care of this set as it will be to take care of the adult ones.
Safety. Safety principles at this age often focus on the risks of increased mobility — from not running with lollipop sticks in one's mouth to not running into the street. Unlike in years past, your child will probably do a much better job of following the rules — at least on a good day! This is also the time to teach your child the importance of wearing a properly fitting bike helmet while riding any type of bicycle or tricycle, make sure he is always well secured in an appropriate car or booster seat, and convince him early on of the importance of buckling up. Most of all, set a good example for your child and be sure to practice what you preach!
