My husband Pat and I have been taking our sons into voting booths since they were infants. During the 2006 mid-term elections, or eldest, Spencer, was 6 and his questions had progressed from "Can I have another flag sticker?" to "Does everyoneget to vote?"

With geeky civic pride, we began raving about the power voting gives an individual. Pat whipped up a ballot for Spencer so he could use his single voice to vote on issues that directly affected him: Should we go camping next year? How many times a week should he have to make his bed? Which should we serve more of — broccoli or carrots? Spencer loved it, and we were thrilled to see him deliberating so seriously. (Broccoli won, btw.)
