She's Got the Beat
print

Ava's mom might have taken her to the music store to buy a tom-tom or tabla, bodhran or bongos. But the 2-year-old found what she needed in the kitchen cupboards, and now she's banging away on everything but the kitchen sink (she can't reach that).
In the womb, fetuses rock out to the beat of their mother's heart, 40 weeks on the hit parade. And as early as seven months after birth, babies show a preference for rhythm patterns similar to the way they have been bounced on their parents' knees (one, two, three, four).
As she smacks a wooden spatula against a muffin tin, Ava is learning cause and effect, refining hand-eye coordination, even laying a foundation for language skills. It won't be long before she's tapping out the drum solo from "Wipe Out."
