Wondertime's interview with Rachael, mom of twins Savannah and Christian, who were 2 months and 3 weeks old at the time. (Rachael and Savannah, shown left)
Wondertime: How old was Savannah when the colic started?
Pretty immediately. I'd say within the first few weeks, probably about the third or fourth week.
Wondertime: What were your experiences with the doctors like? Were they dismissive, helpful?
Yeah, they dismissed it. "It's just a baby being a baby, it'll go away."
Wondertime: So did you have to talk to different doctors?
We stuck with that doctor for a little while. We did talk to other doctors and eventually were able to find out it was the acid reflux. We had a barium test done, and the doctor there was able to tell immediately that Savannah suffered from acid reflux. I have twins, and so actually both of them suffered from it — she just had it really bad. With my boy they were able to get him on some Zantac and he was better, but Savannah had a more severe case. The medicine wasn't working for her, so we had to change medicines, but they were able to once they had that barium test.
Even though they put her on medicine, even now she still suffers from it. It eased it, but she gets real colicky. And I know they say that happens late afternoon, but for her it was all the time. It was just constant crying. You could tell she was like cramping up. I tried different formulas — is she constipated, is it the acid reflux? I think it was just a combination of both, the formula was making her constipated and she still had the acid reflux, colicky all the time.
