Children notice differences in each other at an early age, experts say, but they won't have negative associations unless they learned them from adults.
When kids hit school age, they often use unconscious rules to organize the complex demands of their widening world. If at this stage a child meets someone with an unusual name, lifestyle, or appearance, this may "jam" their rule system and confuse them, until a parent helps them understand and incorporate the new information.
