![]() Valance for a Cozy Closet Nook
![]() by: Amy Maclin
A few decorative details can turn an ordinary closet into a special hideaway — for reading, drawing, or just hatching plans. One cozy touch is a valance for the closet rod, like this one at left, which can be made from a standard bed skirt. (Read more about this closet library here.)
With the measuring tape, measure the circumference of the closet rod, then add 1 inch. This will be your guide for the "loop" part of the valance, which will fit around the rod. Lay the bed skirt flat. Then, using the measurement you took in Step 1, measure from the edge where the top of the decorative part of the skirt meets the center portion (the part that usually goes underneath the mattress — it's often white material). Mark off the perimeter at 6-inch intervals with the pencil. Cut around the penciled line and discard the excess white fabric. Now you'll be left with a "U"-shape length of fabric — the decorative ruffle plus a white border, which is what you'll fold over and stitch. Fold the white border over and stitch it to the back of the bedskirt to form the loop. Now the loop is ready to slide over the closet rod. Scrunch up the fabric to give it a gathered look.
