Roll With It

Noisy, active shake-and-make art.
Best for children 3 and up.
Step 1
Cover work area in news-paper. Trace the bottom of a shoebox onto a piece of construction paper (or card stock or printer paper). Then cut out the traced shape, put a piece of rolled tape on the back, and stick it in the bottom of the shoebox.
Step 2
Fill small paper cups or plastic containers about half full with different colors of washable paint (we used Sargent Washable Glitter Paint, $3 for a set of 6, and Crayola Washable Finger Paint, $9 for a set of 6, both at misterart.com).
Step 3
Place one marble (for kids 3 and up) or a rubber ball (we liked the Spikee Ball, $6, officeplayground.com) in each cup and make sure it's fully covered with paint. (Add more paint if you need to.) With a spoon (or fingers), scoop a marble or ball out of a cup, letting some of the goopy paint drip off, and put it in the shoebox.
Step 4
Tilt the box as quickly or slowly as you like and watch the marble create a design on the paper. Mix it up with other colors and more marbles as desired. When your work is complete, remove the paper and let dry completely, about 2 hours.
