This summer, consider schooling your kid (and 6 of her friends) in the lost art of letter writing. What's the payoff? A really cool rainbow of postcards for each by September.
1. Buy a set of 49 blank postcards in rainbow colors – red, orange, yellow, etc. – ROY G. BIV, remember? (set of 49 Rainbow Postcards, $15, newenglandart.com)
2. Address the 7 red cards to yourself and 6 of your friends. Do the same with the 7 orange cards, the 7 yellow cards, and so forth until all 49 cards are addressed.
3. Give each kid a set of cards in one color (Taylor gets indigo, Cheyenne gets violet, and so on). Tell everyone to mail out the cards over the summer, describing what they've been up to, with maybe a drawing on the front.
4. At summer's end, each kid can point to a full spectrum of experiences.
Extra:Monograms are optional (but make the sender look so important, says one child we know) at expressionery.com, where kids can design their own return-address labels ($10 to $16 for 120).
